After nine years of entering the ballot without success, Maintel’s very own Ruth Bowdery finally crossed the finish line of the London Marathon 2025, achieving a personal goal and making a real difference in someone else’s life along the way.
On a day that proved to be one of the hottest in the marathon’s 45-year history, Ruth ran alongside 59 fellow members of her running club, Runnpac, and was one of 56,640 finishers, helping to set a new Guinness World Record for the largest number of marathon finishers globally.
Reflecting on the experience, Ruth shared:
“It’s something I’ve wanted to do before turning 50 – this was my last chance, and it couldn’t have been more memorable.”
With incredible crowd support and complete strangers shouting encouragement, Ruth was spurred on by the unity and energy that define the London Marathon.
“The atmosphere completely carries you through. It’s a real testament to the power of people,” she said.
More Than a Marathon
What made Ruth’s achievement even more meaningful was the cause behind it. She dedicated her run to raise money for her friend and fellow Runnpac member, Cole, who is currently undergoing treatment for triple-negative breast cancer. The funds are helping cover living expenses during Cole’s recovery, offering both financial relief and emotional support.
To date, Ruth has raised over £3,700, thanks to the generosity of the Maintel community and beyond.
“I’ve always believed in paying things forward. While I can’t make Cole better, I hope this brings her comfort and helps take away some of the financial worry so she can focus on getting better,” Ruth added.
We are incredibly proud of Ruth – not just for completing a physically demanding challenge, but for doing so with humility, purpose, and heart. Her journey reflects the 3 C’s we stand by at Maintel
Ruth’s story reminds us that success isn’t only measured by the finish line, but also by the impact we make on others along the way.
