Why Cisco SD-Routing Matters? Good question, this has been a topic that has been talked about a fair bit of late. So, in this blog post, I wanted to offer up an overview of this capability and explore why it might just matter to your organisation.
What exactly is Cisco SD-Routing?
Cisco SD-Routing simplifies network configuration and management by centralising control over a distributed network of Cisco routers. It departs from the traditional model of autonomous routers, each requiring individual configuration and maintenance.
In summary, SD-Routing provides centralised management with the Catalyst SD-WAN Manager acting as a single point of control to enable configuration, monitoring, and troubleshooting of all connected routers from a centralised location.
How does it do that?
Well, it leverages the YANG (Yet Another Next Generation) data modelling language to provide a structured and automated approach to router configuration, reducing errors and inconsistencies.
And it uses NETCONF (Network Configuration Protocol) to facilitate communication between the Catalyst SD-WAN Manager and Cisco routers. This is what enables dynamic configuration changes and real-time monitoring.
For those interested, Cisco have a great 2 part article on Getting Strated with Netconf/YANG on their blog, you can read that here.
I managed to get some time with Steve Bellfield, one of Maintel’s Senior Design Architects who is just putting the finishing touches to an SD-WAN design for 700+ sites to ask him what he thought about Cisco SD-Routing.
“Cisco have really listened to customers regarding the challenges of moving to an SD-WAN environment and created this innovative additional first, but critical step, into the SD world. SD Routing brings all your traditional WAN devices under a single centralised management platform. This provides a fantastic foundation that will enable an easier and more controlled migration to SD-WAN”
What are the benefits of Cisco SD-Routing?
Cisco SD-Routing offers a transformative approach to network management. Essentially, it can unlock a multitude of benefits for your organisation.
Without getting carried away, can you imagine a scenario in which manual router configurations and individual device troubleshooting become a thing of the past?
Well, Cisco SD-Routing centralises control. It provides a unified platform (I don’t want to say a SPOG, too late!) for configuring, monitoring, and troubleshooting your entire network of Cisco routers.
Of course, this approach helps address the burden of administration and that lets you get your team shifted on to driving those strategic initiatives that propel your business forward.
Cost savings are another potential advantage. If you can embrace automation, Cisco SD-Routing eliminates the need for manual configuration and a bunch of repetitive tasks. This can translate into a reduction in human error and fewer instances of costly network downtime and troubleshooting.
Can SD-Routing help with network agility?
I’m going out on a limb here and saying that you are already taking network agility seriously. And if that’s the case, Cisco SD-Routing can support a rapid response to ever-changing network demands.
With centralised policy enforcement and the ability to make rapid configuration changes, your network can readily adapt to new applications, bandwidth requirements, and branch office expansion. That means your network becomes less of a bottleneck and doesn’t hinder your business’s ability to adapt.
So,what about if you have geographically dispersed branch networks? Then, you are probably already more than aware of how complex, time-consuming, and tiresome management can get. The good news is that this gets streamlined. You get a centralised platform for configuration, monitoring, and troubleshooting of all your branch office routers. Doing this can eliminate the need for on-site IT staff at your locations. And that simplifies management to a large extent, which can result in lower costs.
What about security?
Robust security is essential for any organisation. And yes, you can strengthen your security posture by enabling consistent security policies to be applied across your entire network.
It is that centralised management capability that offers up greater visibility into network activity. This allows you to identify and address potential threats more effectively. With a comprehensive approach, Cisco SD-Routing ensures your network remains secure and protected.
What devices are supported?
Cisco have set out the range of routers that can support SD-Routing. And there for more details on the specifics, you can take a look at the Cisco Data Sheet. Although, to summarise the supported devices are:
- ISR (Integrated Services Router) 4000 Series
- ISR 1000 Series
- Catalyst 8000 Series Routers (with SD-WAN license)
- Catalyst Cellular Gateways
So, when paired with modern routers, this creates a powerful springboard for SD-WAN deployment. This combination improves the integration of diverse network resources – MPLS, broadband internet, and cellular connectivity – into a single, optimised network fabric.
Is SD-Routing a stepping stone to SD-WAN?
It should be apparent by now, that SD-Routing lays the groundwork for a unified SD-WAN architecture. And this can empower you with a range of significant benefits.
Firstly, SD-WAN ensures optimised application performance. Traffic is dynamically routed across the most suitable connection based on pre-defined policies. This translates to consistent performance for critical applications. And that can eliminate disruptions caused by slowdowns or outages.
Secondly, SD-WAN offers better network visibility. The centralised dashboards can provide real-time insights into network performance. You gain a clear understanding of resource utilisation and application health. This allows for the proactive identification and resolution of potential issues before they impact your business.
And finally, SD-WAN can enhance your agility and scalability. Branch office rollouts can become simpler and that makes accelerating network expansion more efficient. It facilitates rapid network changes. This enables organisations to seamlessly adapt to evolving business needs. Additionally, SD-WAN readily scales to accommodate business growth, ensuring your network remains adaptable as your requirements expand.
